With more than 7 million people, the Bay Area is a center of culture, education and commerce for the Pacific Rim.  But it is also home to more than 35,000 homeless men, women and children.

As the community’s largest provider of services to those who are homeless and impoverished, the Bay Area Rescue Mission, operating from Richmond, CA, offers people the help they need to build a brighter tomorrow.  Nearly half of the concentrated poverty neighborhoods in the Bay Area are in the East Bay.  This means over 150,000 extremely low-income people reside in 11 cities in Alameda County and 20 cities in Contra Costa County.

Statement of Purpose

To share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with the homeless and needy and empower them to change their world.

Statement of Vision

To assist every homeless and impoverished person who comes to us in need by providing a holistic continuum of care environment.  From short-term emergency services through long-term live-in recovery programs and on to transitional living assistance, the Bay Area Rescue Mission’s innovative programs account for the fact that more than 80% of all graduates have remained successful.  Some of the key elements by which the Bay Area Rescue Mission presents the means and opportunity for real help and lasting hope include:
  • Emergency Shelter and the provision of Meals and Clothing
  • Long-term Residential Recovery Programs
  • Educational and Vocational Training
  • Life Skills Training
  • Societal and Family Reconciliation
  • Assistance in overcoming Financial and Legal Issues
  • Assistance with Medical Care and Healthy Living
  • Programs for Inner-City Children and Children of Rescue Mission Residential Programs
  • Job Placement and Transitional Living

Additionally, the Bay Area Rescue Mission actively seeks to inform and involve the community through volunteerism, collaborative relationships, and community partnerships.

History

Since 1965, the Bay Area Rescue Mission has been dedicated to helping homeless and impoverished people of the Bay Area to overcome and break the cycle of homelessness.  Founder Larry Wattell partnered with people of compassion and launched the Rescue Mission by offering 12 beds for emergency shelter while providing 36 meals every day.

In 1972 the Rescue Mission expanded its efforts by adding emergency services for women and children.  By 1978, the Rescue Mission had reached capacity as the need for their Christian ministry and services continued to grow.  A new building was completed in 1980, housing a chapel, offices, a kitchen, and a dining room, as well as, additional lodging for men in BARM’s New Life Recovery Program.

In 1985, the Rescue Mission also built an emergency shelter for 150 women and children.  In 1990, the Rescue Mission built a new center to serve the needs of the community; this center included a food pantry and distribution center.  Today this center, receives more than $8,000,000 worth of donated food, clothing, furniture and other household items which are used at the Rescue Mission, distributed to the community’s near homeless or shared with 60 other organizations which help the homeless and impoverished both locally and internationally.

A few years later, a 13,000 square-foot building was donated to the Rescue Mission which enabled the Mission to enlarge its after-school programs for children and youth and to greatly expand its educational center for adults.

In 2000, an expansion and renovation project of the kitchen led to the establishment of a Culinary Arts Training Center.  This program allows members in the recovery program to receive college credit and earn culinary degrees.  In recent years, the Culinary Arts Program has received national recognition and enabled the Rescue Mission to launch additional educational and vocational programs.

Rev. John Anderson accepted the position as the new President/CEO of the Bay Area Rescue Mission on January 1, 2000.  During the previous six years, John had served the Bay Area Rescue Mission as the Director of Programs, Chief Financial Officer, and Vice-President of Development. For the past 20 years, he has witnessed the profound impact of the Rescue Mission.

In August of 1993 when Anderson arrived at the Rescue Mission, it had a donor base of 4,500 supporters and its annual donations totaled $900,000 in cash and $200,000 in in-kind goods. In 2013, the Rescue Mission had more than 18,500 active donors which contribute $4,850,000 in cash donations and $7,000,000 in in-kind donations.  The Bay Area Rescue Mission is the Bay Area’s largest privately funded organization dedicated to helping the homeless and impoverished.

“Although we are located in Richmond, a city of less than 100,000 people, we have taken the approach that the Greater Bay – San Francisco Area is our market area in terms of services and fundraising potential.  While there’s a challenge being in a community of less than 100,000 people, out of 276 rescue missions in the Association of Gospel Rescue Missions, we are the only one, in an area this small, with a total annual budget exceeding $13 million in 2014”
The statistics of homelessness in the Greater Bay Area are staggering.  Last year, BARM provided more than 1,450,000 meals and 87,965 nights’ lodging to the homeless in addition to the countless other services and assistance offered to those in need.  Yet, tragically, BARM was forced to turn away more than 4,000 homeless people because its facilities were too small to meet the need.

This nearly 50-year-old, faith-based, nonprofit organization recently embarked upon a capital campaign to raise $6 million in support of the new Bridge of Hope Center for Women & Children.  To better address the needs of this most vulnerable population,  BARM plans to build this new facility to provide life-saving services to an additional 150 women and children, including classrooms, counseling areas, a medical center, a rooftop recreational area and more by 2017.
