Mission Statement:

From its inception in 1899, Calvary Hospital has been faithfully devoted to providing palliative care to adult patients in the advanced stages of cancer, addressing the symptoms of the disease, not its cure. A voluntary, not-for-profit hospital, operated in connection with the Archdiocese of New York, Calvary continues to embody this tradition of caring through the services and programs offered and through the dedication and concern shown by its staff members.

The Hospital will continue to be faithful to this tradition through a twofold commitment. Calvary will strive primarily to expand its programs and services to meet the emerging physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of both patients and families through the provision of acute inpatientoutpatient, home carehospice, and satellite services. In addition, through the Palliative Care Institute the Hospital will endeavor to transmit to other health care professionals, through research and education, the knowledge and competence which it has developed in the care of the advanced cancer patient.

Through this twofold commitment, Calvary Hospital will deepen and strengthen the philosophy of compassionate care which has been the cornerstone of its program of service, and will offer to those in our expanded community and others, a tradition of successful experience in the care of the advanced cancer patient.

Calvary Hospital is the only fully accredited acute care specialty hospital exclusively providing palliative care for advanced cancer patients in the United States.  Founded in 1899 by a small group of widows in New York, Calvary Hospital was fully accredited in 1965 and moved to its present 200-bed site in the Bronx in 1978.  Since then, Calvary has continued to expand with a 25-bed satellite facility in Brooklyn and most recently expansion into Manhattan, through the Dawn Greene Hospice at Mary Manning Walsh Home, which, under the supervision of Calvary at Home, will allow for inpatient levels of care in Manhattan.

With more than 950 employees, Calvary serves more than 5,500 patients annually, providing palliative care, which is the active treatment of the symptoms, not the cure of the disease, in order to make our patients as comfortable as possible. Programs include inpatient care, case management, outpatient carehospicehome care and support programs for families and friends.  The hospital is run under the direction of President & CEO Frank Calamari.

Calvary Fund (aka the Fund), the fundraising and public affairs arm of the hospital, was created to support the Hospital’s unique and historic mission.  The leader of the Fund serves on the Calvary executive team and reports to President Calamari, who provides oversight and strategic direction to the Executive Vice President.  The Hospital and the Fund each has its own Board of Directors, though the two govern in conjunction and work quite closely.

The Opportunity:  Executive Vice President

The Executive Vice President of the Calvary Fund will lead all development and marketing activities for Calvary Hospital and will work closely with the President & CEO and both Boards of Directors to build solid programs in the philanthropic community.  The Executive Vice President will provide a strategic fundraising vision and subsequently lead and implement all fundraising and marketing efforts for the Fund staff. There are five (5) direct reports into the Executive Vice President: Director, Foundation and Corporate Relations, Director, Major and Planned Gifts, Director, Annual Giving and Special Events, Director, Public Affairs and Community Relations, and the Development and External Affairs Coordinator.
