Homeboy Industries provides hope, training, and support to formerly gang-involved and previously incarcerated men and women, allowing them to redirect their lives and become contributing members of our community. Homeboy Industries is a beacon of hope and opportunity for those seeking to leave gang life, for whom the barriers and challenges are great, and for whom there is virtually no other avenue to enter mainstream society.
Father Greg, (Rev. Gregory J. Boyle, S.J.), is the founder and executive director of Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, the largest gang intervention, rehabilitation and re-entry program in the world. In the 1980s, the City of Los Angeles was struggling to deal with escalating gang violence and gang membership. At that time, Boyle Heights had more gang members per capita than any other place in the country. As the former pastor of the Dolores Mission Church, Father Greg realized, with the help of many people in his parish, that he needed to provide jobs and education as alternatives to the gangs and the senseless violence they create. “Gang violence is about a lethal absence of hope. Nobody has ever met a hopeful kid who joined a gang,” Father Greg, a native Angelino, has said. To that end, he started a small job program, "Jobs for a Future" in 1988, flourishing and evolving into Homeboy Industries in 2001 as an independent, charitable, nonprofit organization.
A UCLA study has proven that the Homeboy model works. It found that 70% of Homeboy graduates have not been arrested on new charges two years after leaving the program. Their “special sauce” is a unique mix of “therapeutic attachment and unconditional positive regard”, and at Homeboy Industries, they stand together and say: “It takes strength to change your path; but with us, you don’t have to go it alone. Together, we remove tattoos, We teach parenting and life Skills. We offer high school and college assistance. We provide mental health and substance abuse support services. We help overcome legal hurdles and register people to vote. And, we provide vocational training for men and women and we place them in jobs.”
Leading the social entrepreneurship movement, the Global Homeboy Network (GHN) was created to nourish like-minded organizations that are creating healthier communities by standing with those on the margins of society. There are more than 85 GHN groups across the U.S. and in other countries that are actively working to provide hope and a future to high-risk populations, applying Homeboy’s principles to do so.
Today, Homeboy Industries employs and trains former gang members and felons in a range of social enterprises (Homeboy Bakery, Homegirl Café & Catering, Homeboy Farmers Markets, HomeboyFoods.com and Homeboy Silkscreen & Embroidery), as well as, provides critical services to 10,000+ men and women who walk through its doors every year seeking a better life.
Affectionately known as “Saint of the Hood”, Father Greg Boyle is the author of the New York Times-bestseller Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion, and is the subject of Academy Award winner Freida Lee Mock’s 2012 documentary, G-Dog. He has received the California Peace Prize and was inducted into the California Hall of Fame. In 2014, the White House named him a “Champion of Change”. He received the 2016 Humanitarian of the Year Award from the James Beard Foundation.
Homeboy Industries, a $17 million organization, offering “The Strength to Change”, is supported by donations from individuals, foundations and corporations, and, approximately 42% of its income stream is from its social enterprises’ profits. This vital nonprofit provides free programs and services in its quest to break the intergenerational cycle of incarceration, violence, crime and substance abuse and become members of society. Homeboy Industries is preparing to launch its VISION 2018 capital campaign with a total goal of raising $30 to $45 million for capital needs, including the purchase and rehab of a new building, plus, facility enhancements for current programs, to meet its “1,000 Day Priorities” and life-changing program expansion. Its call to action will also encompass a fundraising plan for social impact venture funds to provide start-up support for new initiatives, along with seed money for transitional housing. The campaign is expected to begin its early stages in 2017 upon completion of the Board of Directors’ strategic planning process now underway. Tom Vozzo, Homeboy’s CEO, has a vision and strategy to diversify and build all revenue streams, including earned income, so no single source exceeds 50% of total revenue, thus creating a stable base of future operations.
The Opportunity: Chief Development Officer
The successful candidate will serve as a passionate promoter and a visionary thinker in building and leading the organization’s comprehensive fundraising program to support significant and continued organizational growth. Homeboy Industries’ development department will be led by an ambitious, compassionate and entrepreneurial executive in the creation of new and the implementation of existing fundraising programs and systems to produce long-term, sustainable results. The CDO will bring a strong working knowledge of the LA market and be responsible for leveraging resources from the philanthropic sector and building strategic alliances within the broader communities. Reporting to the CEO, this fundraising leader, a person with a heart, will inspire through best practices and guide a dedicated, 8-member development team which primarily serves the needs of the annual fund, major gifts, grants, events and communications.
With the advent of the VISION 2018 capital campaign, this role represents a unique opportunity for a thoughtful and talented professional with fundraising and communications expertise, in tandem with, a background in nonprofit management to strengthen funding resources and ensure the future of this extraordinary organization’s impactful programs.
Leadership and Management
- Develop and implement measurable objectives, strategies, budgets, funding strategies and timelines for both annual/operational philanthropy as well as the planned campaign.
- Provide collaborative leadership in maintaining a positive and productive working relationship among the Founder and executives, Board of Directors, partner organizations and volunteers.
- Lead, develop, motivate, supervise and maintain a highly effective, productive and cohesive staff with both professional/technical expertise and operational talent.
- Guide, motivate, and provide strategic direction for the Board of Directors, Leadership Team and volunteers in achieving the fundraising goals.
- Provide strategic leadership in significantly growing the organization’s donor base and giving levels.
- Play an integral role on the Staff Executive Team, continually advancing the role and importance of philanthropy within the organizational culture.
- Develop and maintain productive and respectful relationships with colleagues, the Board of Directors, other volunteers, donors, prospects, Leadership Team members, the philanthropic community and other related constituency groups.
- Serve as an organizational resource by providing appropriate training and support to the Executive Director, CEO, Board and others involved in fundraising.
- Explore the viability of establishing a planned giving program, including charitable remainder trusts, gift annuity agreements, wills and bequests.
- Oversee and implement all aspects of fund development, including Board and other volunteer activities and relationships, and actively engage in efforts with major gift prospects and donors.
- Direct, manage, and support the Board and staff in their fundraising activities (primarily annual fund, events, and some volunteer events).
- Staff the Founder and CEO on their prospect portfolio and ensure major donors have individual strategies that move them toward deeper engagement and higher giving.
- Increase philanthropic support and meet strategic objectives by further developing, implementing, routinely evaluating and leading a comprehensive annual fundraising program which incorporates, but is not limited to, major giving, planned giving, annual fund, direct mail, research, online giving, corporate and foundation giving, sponsorships, special events and new fundraising initiatives.
- Provide thorough and accurate monthly, quarterly, annual and other reports to the CEO on all development activities.
- Identify, cultivate, solicit, close and steward major gift prospects and donors.
External & Community Relations
- Serve as an articulate, passionate and visible spokesperson, and as the primary face of fundraising and development throughout the organization.
- Provide strategic leadership to effectively communicate the mission, goals and accomplishments to donors, prospective donors, media, and the broader, statewide community.
- Cultivate long-term relationships with prospective funders through donor recognition programs and stewardship to ensure continued funding and funder involvement.
- Design and execute a plan for the 2018 30th anniversary campaign.
Planning and Administrative Oversight
- As a key member of the Staff Executive Team, ensure optimal fundraising policies and institutional philosophies.
- In partnership with the Executive Director, CEO and Board, determine overall fund development and revenue goals from individual and major giving, corporate and foundation giving, and special events.
- Develop all appropriate systems to manage a comprehensive and growing fund development program.
- Manage the monthly budget reconciliation and forecast processes.
- Oversee donor/customer service team, which provides timely and accurate response to questions and concerns and ensures accurate record keeping and database maintenance.
- Ensure that the donor database and supporting business software systems operate to optimal functionality.
- Support Homeboy Industries’ integrated communications, including print, web and social media, and media and public relations.
Communications and Media Relations
- Lead marketing staff and vendors in the planning and execution of comprehensive, integrated communications efforts for all fundraising campaigns, including mass and targeted mailings, newsletter, annual report, and other communications methods as appropriate.
- Manage communications staff and the day-to-day activities of marketing with clear objectives.
- Devise and implement strategic external communications and media plans.
The Qualified Candidate
Homeboy Industries seeks an innovative, entrepreneurial and seasoned nonprofit administrator with at least 10 years of progressive experience in diverse development programs and leadership positions to join this mission-driven and widely acclaimed organization. The Chief Development Officer will be a goal-oriented, collaborative leader and future-thinking team player who is passionate and committed to the mission and vision of Homeboy Industries and its culture of caring and second chances. An integral member of the Staff Executive Team, the CDO will oversee all aspects of all philanthropic development and communications. This position provides an exceptional opportunity for a person who is focused on making a difference in the lives of others.
Specific Requirements Include:
- Passion for the vision and mission of Homeboy Industries.
- 10 years of progressive, senior-level nonprofit and fundraising/philanthropic leadership experience, with a great understanding of giving trends, major fundraising events, and nonprofit organizations in the Los Angeles Metro area.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field; Master’s degree (e.g., MSW) and/or CFRE credential preferred.
- Significant experience with a mission-driven approach to securing funding from individuals, corporations and foundations with proven results in achieving or exceeding annual and long-term goals.
- Career track record that shows stability with an organization and capacity to develop and nurture relationships culminating in major gift success, including planned giving.
- Entrepreneurial, creative problem solver with background in participatory management.
- Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal communication and presentation skills with the ability to serve as a key spokesperson and advocate for Homeboy.
- Demonstrated ability to work successfully with a Board and other volunteers, as well as civic and business leaders, in a collaborative and respectful manner.
- Team player who can give and take advice and support, is flexible and adaptable, a good listener, patient and a true people person who excels in relationship-building and thrives in a synergistic environment.
- Strategic in thinking and orientation, with demonstrated ability to develop creative fund development plans to serve as a guiding force, coupled with a willingness to embrace change.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite and CRM/donor database programs such as Raiser’s Edge, plus the ability to evaluate, implement and properly utilize new technologies to enhance the Homeboy Industries’ development processes.
