                                      PUTTING IDEALISM TO WORK
To help keep students in school and on track to graduate.

About City Year

City Year is dedicated to fighting the national dropout crisis. This 25-year-old, education-focused nonprofit organization is committed to leveraging the talent, energy and idealism of the young adult AmeriCorps members to serve full-time in schools to help students stay on track – and get back on track – to graduate from high school.  Its corps members do this by honing in on the “ABC’s”, the three early warning indicators that have been defined through research at John Hopkins University: poor attendance, disruptive behavior, and course failure in math or English.  To find the students who need their help the most, City Year partners with schools and districts to identify students most at risk of dropping out, and provide them with targeted academic, and socio- emotional support. From devoted corps members serving full-time, to strong partnerships with school administrators, and to individualized support for students, City Year’s “Whole School, Whole Child” approach has made a measurable impact on the students and communities served.

City Year’s “In School & On Track:  A Plan for Transformational Impact”, a ten-year initiative, is designed to bring City Year corps members to 50% of all of the students falling off track in City Year’s U.S. locations, which will require expanding the number of corps members from 2,700 to 6,000 nationally, and engaging school districts, the private sector and the federal government as partners. In Jacksonville, this means growing from 58 corps members in six schools this year, to 285 corps members serving in 26 schools by 2021.  City Year is currently serving in 25 cities across the United States and in three international affiliate sites located in Johannesburg, South Africa, and, Birmingham and London, England.  City Year’s motto is simple and the aim is high – Give a Year. Change the World.

City Year's Long-Term Impact Goal is to reach 50% of students that are off track in the cities where it serves, to ensure 80% of the students in the schools where City Year serves reach 10th grade on track and on time, and to serve in cities that produce two-thirds of the nation's dropouts.

City Year receives revenue through private philanthropy, as well as the federal government, through AmeriCorps, and from school districts and other local government sources. City Year has earned Charity Navigator’s highest rating since 2003, certifying their commitment to accountability, transparency and responsible fiscal management. Only 1% of charities have received this distinction for nine consecutive years, placing City Year among the most trustworthy nonprofits in America.

More about City Year and City Year Jacksonville

History & Inspiration

City Year was founded in Boston in 1988 by Michael Brown and Alan Khazei, then-roommates at Harvard Law School, who felt strongly that young people in service could be a powerful resource for addressing America's most pressing issues.  They built City Year with the conviction that one person can make a difference; and since its inception, City Year has promoted the vision of service as a common expectation – and a real opportunity – for citizens all around the world. City Year corps members commit to a year of full-time service in challenged urban schools, where they serve as tutors, mentors and role models, with a focus on getting and keeping students on track to graduation. Since its inception, City Year has been a leader in the growing national service movement, leading to the establishment of AmeriCorps, the passage of the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, and the creation of Voices for National Service.  City Year applies the principles of national service to its work with students and, in doing so, develops students as both learners and leaders.  City Year is a proud member of AmeriCorps and the Voices for National Service and ServiceNation coalitions.  Please find more information about the national organization at: http://www.cityyear.org/about.aspx

Thanks to strong support from AmeriCorps, Duval County Public Schools, the private sector and a strong local Founding Committee and Site Board, 58 City Year corps members are currently deployed in 6 of Jacksonville’s highest need schools. City Year Jacksonville’s service model was piloted in 2 schools during the site’s Start Up year in 2012-2013.

The District-wide graduation rate is 72.1 percent, about 10 points below the national average, and 53 percent of the students are performing satisfactory or higher in reading and math. “We are proud to have City Year Jacksonville help our students and schools succeed, and we look forward to seeing the results that will come from these young leaders,” said Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown. “As Mayor of Jacksonville, my goal is to have a 100 percent high school graduation rate and to see 50 percent of our population with college degrees. I believe City Year can help us get there.”

“What inspires me most about City Year are the corps members.  I look and see them putting greater causes over themselves, believing in all the children, believing in themselves, and giving so much time and energy and service,” said Kim Ward, City Year Jacksonville Board Chair. “They are showing students that they have all the tools within them to be successful, they just needed someone to believe in them.” Nearly one in three students in Jacksonville are at risk for dropping out. The consequences are real: students who drop out are eight times more likely to become incarcerated and three times more likely to be unemployed. When a student drops out of school it has a lasting effect on our communities.

By the 2015-16 academic year, City Year Jacksonville aims to work in 10 Duval County public schools and deploy 100 City Year corps members, all focusing their efforts on reducing the high school dropout rate.
